Do you wake up hurt from sleeping in the wrong position? One of the most common complaints that patients express to their chiropractors that they experience morning pain in one or more joints because they slept in an odd position or on an uncomfortable bed. Stop for a moment and try to think about your sleep habits as far as quality of position. Do you ever wake up in pain or with a loss of circulation? Does your bed partner complain about you tossing and turning during the night?
Sleeping on your stomach
The best Charlotte chiropractors understand that there are innumerable factors that can be a factor or a cause of spinal misalignment, and sleep position is a major one. One of the worst positions that any person can assume during sleep is to sleep on their stomach. It is not contortion, but it is close. When you sleep on your stomach, you are laying with your neck turned to one side or the other with your lower back arching all night long. You can be sure that after hours in this position, you are going to pain the next morning. If this is your common or habitual sleeping position, especially if you have been sleeping that way your entire life, it is going to take a several weeks of interrupted sleep to change your habit. However, it will be worth the effort in the long run. To make the transition easier, try sleeping with a body pillow.
Sleeping on your side
If you customarily sleep on your side, make sure you have a soft but supportive pillow that is at the proper height to keep your head in line with the rest of your spine. A firm mattress can be a good thing, but make sure that it is not so firm that it will create pressure points on your shoulders and hips. Placing a medium sized pillow between your knees while you sleep will also help to keep your lower back properly aligned through the night.
Sleeping on your back
Patients, who commonly sleep on their back, are least likely to have pain from their sleeping position. However, sleeping on your back does not mean that you will totally always awaken pain free. Most chiropractic doctors would recommend that you use an orthopedic pillow that is designed to allow your neck to rest in a comfortable position throughout the night. They also recommend that patients who have lower back issues sleep with a pillow underneath their knees to provide the necessary support for your lower back.
