It is time to offer our best Charlotte chiropractor tips that can help you enjoy a healthy and productive time of renewal. It is hard to believe, but soon we will turn the corner from winter and head straight into spring. This means warmer weather and longer days are ahead, bringing a myriad of activities that just are not available in the cold and icy winter. Just like kids headed for their favorite swimming hole, we can’t wait to jump into spring activities; whether it is gardening, hiking, fishing, or swimming. We thought that before you jump headfirst into spring activities, that we would offer some tips to help you start off the new season avoiding the risk of injury and even getting healthier. Consider the following tips to help keep you healthy for spring:
Wear the proper shoes
At the first sign of warm weather, everyone breaks out the short pants and casual shoes. Spring fashions often mean open toed sandals and flip flops. If you plan on wearing your shoes for an extended period of time, it is best to try and find footwear that will provide both support and protection. There is not a lot of research on the adverse effect of flip flops; however, we do know that they can cause an unnatural stride, which can worsen existing conditions. From clinical experience, we find that patients do better when they wear shoes that provide more support for longer walks.
Get in shape for spring activities
Before you start that spring cleaning project, or start preparing the soil for your garden, you should consider adding some core stability exercises to your routine. Core stability exercises are an essential element that can help you prevent low back pain and decrease your chances of injury. Proper core exercises are easy to do, and easy on your body. They are designed to make sure that your spine is in a neutral position, and does not require repetitive flexion of your spine (in other words, no sit ups). If you are going to work on your garden, do not make the mistake of going straight from the bed to the garden. Make sure that your muscles are warmed up first, and avoid extended periods of bending over first thing in the morning. Start the day off with a light breakfast and wait at least 30 minutes to spare the discs in your spine. Many of us are excited to get out into the nice weather, just try to avoid doing too much too soon.
Drink plenty of fluids
Staying properly hydrated is so very important. Increased activity and warmer temperatures mean that you need to drink more. Be cautious of drinking too many caffeinated beverages, including those delightful tasting cold coffee drinks. They are in effect, diuretics, and can dehydrate you more quickly.
