Charlotte NC ChiropractorSafety in the sun

A top Charlotte NC chiropractor often reminds parents that infants, toddlers, and children are extra sensitive to the sun. Protecting their skin should be a priority all year around, and especially during peak hours in the long days of summer. This goal is attained through a combination of persistence and good habits. Beyond the use of sunscreen, it is important to make sure that children wear proper clothing and eye protection. Hopefully, your children will enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities without increasing risk to their health. The following tips will help you teach your children to make sun safety a part of their everyday lifestyle.

  1. Use plenty of sun block or sunscreen

Most people do not realize that sunscreen must be applied at least 30 minutes before you or your child is exposed to the sun’s rays. For babies and children older than 6 months, it is advised that you use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Even with the use of sunscreen, you should dress your children in protective clothing. For babies younger than 6 months, always keep him or her out of direct sunlight. Dress your baby in protective clothing that includes a hat with a brim. If possible, even babies should wear sun glasses. Scented or colorful sunscreens can make it easier for you to see which areas have been covered well. Be sure to cover the ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and back of the neck. Also apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen after swimming or eating, or every 2 to 3 hours.

  1. Wear protective clothing

Wearing protective clothing and hats is crucial when it comes to protecting your child’s skin from UV damage. It is important to remember that wet, light-colored clothing can leave you exposed to just as much sunlight as bare skin. It is best to use dark colors, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. A good rule of thumb is to use clothing that does not let any light through when held up to the sun. Sunglasses are critical for providing UV protection to guard against damage to the eyes, and hats prevent sunburned scalps and faces. If you are planning a trip to areas without shade, bring along a large umbrella or canopy.

  1. Avoid sun during peak hours

It is wise to limit your children’s outdoor playtime between the hours of 10a.m. and 3p.m. for standard time, and between 11a.m. and 4p.m. for daylight savings time. This allows you to avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun’s rays are at their strongest. This includes when the day is cloudy or cooler. The ultraviolet (UV) rays are just as strong as on a bright, sunny day. If your child must be outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply sufficient sunscreen.

  1. Set the example

Remember, if your child sees you following sun safety rules, he or she will follow suit. Protecting your skin is essential for every member of the family. Start your children out right so they will develop good habits that will pay off for decades, even in to their old age.
