Millions of Americans are affected by work-related injuries every year — 4.2 million in 2012, to be exact. Such injuries are usually due to repetitive motions, lifting heavy loads or sitting in front of a computer all day. This is why the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) took advantage of the National Chiropractic Month this spring to make people more aware of how they can avoid work-related injuries. The tips are very simple and will help the most common work-related muscoloskeletal injuries that can cause severe pain and discomfort if not prevented.
According to Dr. Richard Brassard: “By making relatively small changes in your workplace environment – using proper lifting techniques or by replacing your office chair with one that provides improved back support – you can help minimize your risk of injury and avoid making an existing condition even worse.”
The American Chiropractic Association gave the following tips to prevent on-the-job injuries like back pain and neck pain:
1. If your work requires you to be in front of the computer most of the day, sit with your knees at approximately a 90- to 120-degree angle. To be more comfortable, use an angled foot rest to support your feet. Make sure that you take micro breaks so you can stretch your legs and arms.
2. Do not lift heavy objects by bending over. Instead, go in a squat position and pick up the object from there. Remember to keep your back straight and hold the object close to your body. Never twist your body while lifting.
3. Most importantly, exercise regularly!
Furthermore, the American Chiropractic Association suggests chiropractic care for the prevention and treatment of work-related injuries. Chiropractic care is very effective and costs less compared to traditional medical care, a statement that Dr. Henry Rice of ChiroCarolina strongly agrees to.
