Injured - Charlotte, NCChildren are hurt by backpacks

The best chiropractic doctors make their primary focus to keep you and your family pain free, and to help you avoid being injured. It’s time for the kids to go back to school and before you buy that giant sized backpack that can carry everything from lunch to books to sports equipment; stop and think about how much weight can your child safely carry. Every year, increasing numbers of school aged children are injured or complain of pain related to excessively heavy backpacks.

Consider the basic health problems that heavy backpacks can cause:

  • Poor posture
  • Hip pain and soreness
  • Misalignment of the back and neck
  • Knee injury
  • Headaches
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shoulder injury

Your child is definitely at risk for all of the above problems if they constantly carry a back pack that is too heavy. However, the most concerning issue should be misalignment of the back and neck because this can lead to even more long term problems.

Chiropractic tips to avoid injury:

  1. Determine the proper weight and monitor it

It is recommended that your child’s backpack weight should be no more than 10% of his or her body weight. Encourage your child to refrain from carrying everything they own. Help them to plan ahead to determine which books and materials will be needed for the day, and to carry only what is necessary. It would be good to help them keep their backpack at a safe weight until the message has sunk in.

  1. Help them organize their backpack

It might help to refer to hiking or backpacking information. The basic rule of thumb is to make sure that heavy items are closer to the back and the entire weight should be centered between the shoulders. This means that loose hanging water bottles need to be in the backpack or securely fastened to the back pack.

  1. Purchase only backpacks with two adjustable straps

We have spent a lot of time talking about weight, but backpacks that have just one strap, or spaghetti string straps will cause injury. Remind your child that it is important to use both straps when wearing a backpack. Keep the straps adjusted so that the backpack is held close to the body. This helps keep the weight centered by keeping the backpack from swinging from side to side as they walk.

  1. Watch them walk –When your child is not aware, watch then walk with their backpack on. If he or she keeps adjusting their posture while wearing the backpack, then it is too heavy. Listen closely for complaints about aches and pains; particularly in the back, neck, knees, and hips. Any complaints of pain should be followed up with a visit to your chiropractor.
