For babies and children older than 6 months, it is advised that you use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Dress your baby in protective clothing that includes a hat with a brim. If possible, even babies should wear sun glasses. Scented or colorful sunscreens can make it easier for you to see which areas have been covered well. Be sure to cover the ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and back of the neck. Also apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen after swimming or eating, or every 2 to 3 hours.

Wearing protective clothing and hats is crucial when it comes to protecting your child’s skin from UV damage. It is important to remember that wet, light-colored clothing can leave you exposed to just as much sunlight as bare skin. It is best to use dark colors, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. A good rule of thumb is to use clothing that does not let any light through when held up to the sun. Sunglasses are critical for providing UV protection to guard against damage to the eyes, and hats prevent sunburned scalps and faces. If you are planning a trip to areas without shade, bring along a large umbrella or canopy.

  1. Avoid sun during peak hours

It is wise to limit your children’s outdoor playtime between the hours of 10a.m. and 3p.m. for standard time, and between 11a.m. and 4p.m. for daylight savings time. This allows you to avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun’s rays are at their strongest. This includes when the day is cloudy or cooler. The ultraviolet (UV) rays are just as strong as on a bright, sunny day. If your child must be outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply sufficient sunscreen.
