Charlotte’s top chiropractor has tips on choosing backpacks

Charlotte’s top chiropractor, in the Charlotte NC area, understands now that kids are heading back to school, teachers and parents are getting them ready for a busy school year. One of the common problems that many kids will experience when in school will have to do with pain in their back. For several hours per day, kids will have to carry around a heavy backpack, filled with huge textbooks and computers. On a typical backpack, the straps can pull the shoulders back and cause pain in the back, neck, and shoulders. The quality of your child’s life can be impacted dramatically if this is not addressed appropriately.

So, how can you help to prevent your child from experiencing back pain that can be caused by carrying around their backpack? You’re about to find out.

Selecting a backpack

Choosing a backpack that will not put any undue stress on any part of your child’s body will be the first step. A backpack should be made with material that is lightweight and is proportional to their body size. It will only cause problems when buying a larger backpack with the intention of fitting more into it.

You should consider looking for a backpack that has individual compartments that will help your child balance the weight effectively. A strap that wraps around the waist and padded shoulder straps that are at least two inches wide are features that you can keep an eye out for when making your decision.

Keep the backpack light

It is important to keep the backpack light and should, ideally, weigh no more than 5 to 10% of your child’s body weight.

Textbooks will be the heaviest component in a backpack. Teachers and parents should consider ways to limit the number of these books in the backpack, even though many of these textbooks are needed for school.

When wearing the backpack

When your child is wearing their backpack the shoulder straps should allow the pack to be closer to their body. This will allow the weight to be distributed evenly over the spine and prevent any misalignment. Using both of the straps on the backpack will be important so the weight distributions will be the same on both sides. You may also want to show your child to bend at the knees when picking up their backpack and tell them to not bend or twist at the waist when they are wearing it.
