According to data compiled by the Jimmy V Foundation, 15.5 million people in the U.S. alone have had a cancer diagnosis. What is more alarming is that based on data gathered between 2010 and 2012, almost 40% of men and women will also be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes.
When asked for their reason for supporting the foundation, Dr. Ferzaan Ali, CEO and chiropractor at ChiroCarolina® in Charlotte answered, “Many of our patients and family members have been affected by cancer, so this is a personal issue for us, and one we fully support.”
The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, award-winning basketball coach and commentator. This foundation awards 100% of direct cash donations and pledges directly to cancer research. Thanks to generous donors, they have an endowment that covers administrative expenses that would normally be covered by donations.
Competitive grants are awarded through a process vetted by a Scientific Advisory Committee, which is comprised of the nation’s top doctors and scientists.
The Jimmy V Foundation has awarded more than $170 million, which has been used to fund cancer research grants nationwide to more than 135 institutions in 38 states and the District of Columbia.
