InjuredThere is no “safe” sport

With the arrival of football season, it is anticipated that there will be a rash of players who will be injured through collisions or drills. However, football has no monopoly on sports injuries. Even non-contact sports such as golf, swimming, or tennis can be hard on participants. There really is no such thing as a safe sport. Beyond the aforementioned sports, there is badminton, weightlifting, gymnastics, wrestling, baseball, basketball, horseback riding, jogging, bowling, and cheerleading. The one thing that they all have in common is that they pose a particularly high risk of injury, especially those that involve the lower back or neck.

Every sport has its risk. Sports that involve repetitive impact, such as weightlifting and horseback riding, are a high risk for lower back injuries. Contact sports, such as hockey, rugby, boxing, and football, produce injuries to the cervical spine or neck. More than one-third of all players from contact sports sustain injury to a joint or major muscle. Skiing has multiple consequences as it involves a significant amount of twisting and turning motion, as well as bone-jarring landings. This leads to a high incidence of muscle sprains, muscle strains, and in some cases, spinal alignment issues.

Soccer participants are more likely to suffer mild to severe head traumas, neck injuries, headache, dizziness, and insomnia as a direct result of heading the ball. The vaulting and apparatus events in gymnastics will yield significant risk of spinal cord, head, and neck injuries from unexpected falls or contact with the floor. Swimmers are highly susceptible to lower back injuries. Swimming styles like the crawl or breaststroke can strain or even hyperextend the lumbar region. If swimmers do not warm up properly, or if they over-train, the hyperextension can fail to heal and lend itself to chronic pain. It is hard to imagine that therapeutic water can be the source of painful injury.
