Recently, at the Professional Football Chiropractic Society’s (PFCS) 6th Annual Educational Symposium, the society hosted Robert Cantu, MD, neurosurgeon and a consultant to the National Football League’s Head. Every year, chiropractors from around the country attend the PFCS Annual Education Symposium. It’s an exciting time for chiropractors and NFL representatives to learn more about how chiropractic care can get players back on the field faster. The trusted chiropractors at ChiroCarolina® are happy to offer their expertise to anyone in the Charlotte, NC, area who needs help recovering after a sports injury or concussion. Dr. Cantu is one of the leading experts on concussions in sports related fields. He has been a huge part of the development and the implementation of standard practices for the management of mild traumatic brain injury, also known as MTBI. Over 130 chiropractors, students and representatives from the National Football League attended the presentation. Dr. Cantu spoke for more than three hours about current research, and standard practices for diagnosis and management of sports related concussions. Additionally, Dr. Cantu discussed the benefits of chiropractic care to relieve secondary complaints after a concussion. Many of the common concussion symptoms, like cervical nerve-root irritation producing headaches, burning facial pain, face reddening and sympathetic nervous discharges, can all be conservatively managed with a chiropractor. Chiropractic care can shorten symptoms that may have kept the athlete out of play. Dr. Cantu highlighted the benefit of chiropractic care in this type of situation. The lecture was well received. The team chiropractor for the Baltimore Ravens, Dr. Doug Miller, said that “Dr. Cantu’s lecture brings to the forefront the importance of proper technique, evaluation, and management of concussions. We now have ample evidence that this type of injury can have long-lasting impairment and it is vital that concussed athletes of all ages have proper time for recovery.” Education and communication key to the PFCS’s mission A clinical professor of neurosurgery at Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Robert Cantu is also the co-director of the Neurological Sports Injury Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Additionally, he is a senior advisor to the NFL’s Head, Neck and Spine Committee. His presentation at the Professional Football Chiropractic Society’s (PFCS) 6th Annual Educational Symposium furthers the organization’s mission “educate and communicate” with the chiropractic community, allied health care professionals and the NFL. It is not only patients that need to be educated about the benefits of chiropractic care. It is also important to discuss benefits with members of the medical staff for the NFL teams. Education is the key to making sure the chiropractic care is part of the health care plan for professional football players. The PFCS is working hard to establish chiropractic care in the NFL. The organization’s board of directors checks the status of each team in the NFL’s chiropractor each year. Additionally, team chiropractors are encouraged to make sure that they keep lines of communication open with the other people on the medical staff of their team, this includes athletic trainers. This can help ensure their success as a chiropractor, and contribute to the overall health of the players. If have been injured during football, or another sport, chiropractic care can be a way to get back to the field faster.
