The final report of the chiropractic demonstration project, “Demonstration of Coverage for Chiropractic Services Under Medicare,” conducted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) done from April 2009 to March 2012 is out. The report shows that 87% of the patients surveyed gave their doctor of chiropractic a score of 8 or higher while 56% gave their chiropractors a perfect 10. Medicare beneficiaries reported that they felt relief after chiropractic treatment. They also said that chiropractic care seems more accessible; adding that they felt that chiropractors listened more intently to their concerns and spent sufficient time with them.
It is even more good news for the chiropractic community since health care costs in all but one demonstration site did not increase significantly even with the addition of chiropractic services.
The project was mandated under section 651 of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003, which took a look at how the expanding coverage of chiropractic services affects four regions in the United States. The aim is to evaluate the feasibility and advisability of covering chiropractic services in the Medicare program of the Social Security Act.
